Mission: New Jersey Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, Inc. (“NJVLA”) provides legal education, representation, and other legal services to the entire State’s Arts Community, and in particular to low income artists and non-profit arts organizations. NJVLA provides a number of levels of legal services. The Legal Line is a 30-60 minute telephone consultation to discuss an arts-related legal issue; it is free and available to any New Jersey artist or arts or cultural organization. In Law Fax consultations, attorneys review short (three pages or fewer) legal documents and discuss the contents with the client in a single 30-60 minute telephone call; this service also is free and available to any New Jersey artist or arts or cultural organization. In a Full Service Referral, NJVLA attorneys take on matters for New Jersey artists and arts and cultural organizations when an arts-related legal issue cannot be resolved in a single telephone call. The attorney's time is provided free, with the client responsible for any costs such as court fees. In general, Full Service referrals are available to non-profit organizations (or organizations wishing to become non-profits) with an annual budget of $750,000 or less and individual artists who, if single, have an annual gross income of $30,000 or less or, if married or cohabiting, a combined $50,000 or less with a $2,000 credit per dependent in either instance. NJVLA also provides a Board Matching service as well as educational programs on a wide variety of arts-related legal topics.
