Working with Interpreters

Description: This "new" half day training is designed for attorneys who interact with Limited English Proficiency clients.

Topics to be covered include:
  • What the law requires: providing language services to LEP individuals in legal proceedings
  • The importance of working with a qualified interpreter
  • How to work with a qualified interpreter on a legal case.
Who can attend: This training is open to attorneys who agree to take at least one pro bono case from a Legal Services program in the year following the training.
Cost: The fee is $15 per person to cover food, beverages and other costs in preparing the training. The fee must be paid by check in advance of the training. Cash payments will not be accepted. Please note the title and date of the training on the check. Checks should be made payable to “LSNJ” and mailed along with your registration form (a copy of which you will receive by email after you register for the training) to:

NJ CLE CREDITS FOR LSNJ SPONSORED TRAININGS AND TASK FORCE SEMINARS

IF YOU WISH TO OBTAIN NJ CLE CREDITS FOR THIS TRAINING, PLEASE:

1. Sign in on the sign in sheet when you arrive at the training, noting your arrival time.
2. Sign out on the sign out sheet when you leave the training, noting your departure time.
3. Fill out one (1) Certificate of Attendance for each day of training you attend. Complete the middle of the Certificate of Attendance with your name, signature, NJ Attorney ID Number and leave it in the red bin on the table outside training room, or with the designated LSNJ staff member if there is no red bin present. Your NJ Attorney ID # can be found at the top of the form you fill out each year for the NJ Client Protection Fund. If you have not saved a copy of your form, you can call the NJ Client Protection Fund and ask them for your NJ Attorney ID # at 609-292-8008 or 609-292-8079.
4. Within thirty (30) days after the training, a designated LSNJ staff person will sign the Certificate of Attendance and send you a copy via e-mail for your records.
