Initial intake and screening of cases for merit and financial eligibility.
We conduct substantive trainings throughout the year at Legal Services of New Jersey in Edison. These trainings are open to pro bono attorneys in exchange for taking at least one pro bono case in the year following the training.
Upon request, an experienced Legal Services staff attorney will be assigned to you to provide mentorship. You may contact your mentor at any time with substantive or procedural questions regarding the case. We are unable to provide mentorship in a few areas in which we have limited or no expertise in-house (e.g. personal injury; and wills, estates and trusts).
Opportunities to shadow/observe our staff attorneys in court in select substantive areas.
Office space to interview clients if needed.
Automatic filing fee waiver for all Legal Services referrals in state court proceedings.
Madden exemption: By stipulation of the New Jersey Supreme Court, NJ-admitted attorneys who volunteer to provide free legal assistance through a Legal Services program or a pro bono program that has been approved by the Supreme Court, and perform a minimum of 25 hours of pro bono service, will be exempt from court-mandated assignments the following year pursuant to Madden v. Delran, 126 N.J. 591 (1992). This provides you the opportunity to work on cases you have an interest or knowledge in rather than an arbitrary assignment. We can provide a letter confirming the hours you volunteer.
Malpractice coverage for our referrals if needed.
