Support & Training

Most pro bono organizations provide some level of support and training. Below is a list of the types of benefits that are generally provided by PROBONONJ participating organizations. Click on the directory button to the right to learn about specific participating organizations.

Training

Several pro bono organizations are accredited service providers that may offer NJ Continuing Legal Education (NJ CLE) courses. Completing training with these organizations has the added benefit of providing NJ CLE credits, usually for a nominal fee.

Support

  • Mentorship. Most pro bono volunteer organizations have experienced attorneys available to answer substantive and procedural questions, and provide guidance on referred cases.

  • Malpractice insurance coverage. Some organizations cover their volunteers.

  • Filing fees. These are waived for many pro bono organizations.

  • Madden exemption. NJ-admitted attorneys who provide 25 hours of pro bono services to clients referred from Supreme Court-recognized programs are exempt from court-mandated assignments the following year. This enables lawyers to work in legal areas of interest or knowledge, rather than those that might be assigned.

  • Limited licenses. Under a special court rule, attorneys admitted out of state or in-house counsel with limited licenses can accept cases referred by Supreme Court-recognized programs.
